Ecoflo Septic System Cost in Ontario: Installed, Yearly and 10 Years Out
The sticker price is only the start. Here is what an Ecoflo costs to install, service and renew in Ontario, and when your lot actually needs one.
The short answer: Premier Tech lists $19,000 to $38,000 installed in Ontario for a three-bedroom home, depending on model and site, before any tertiary add-ons. Add a yearly service contract and media renewal every 10 to 15 years. Planning estimate only.

Ecoflo Septic System Cost in Ontario: What Premier Tech Says
Let’s start with the maker’s own numbers, because they are better than most people expect. Premier Tech, which makes the Ecoflo, publishes an Ontario price for a three-bedroom home, new build or replacement, polyethylene unit. Their page was last updated January 20, 2026 (Premier Tech Ecoflo price page).
| Ecoflo model (Ontario, 3 bedrooms) | Simple site | Difficult site |
|---|---|---|
| Compact biofilter | $22,000 – $35,000 | $28,000 – $38,000 |
| Linear biofilter | $19,000 – $32,000 | $25,000 – $35,000 |
Those are total project prices, but read the fine print: they do not include tertiary add-ons like UV disinfection or nitrogen reduction that your area may require. Our own planning range for advanced treatment systems in Ontario is $35,000 to $65,000+, and Premier Tech’s broader Ontario guide puts advanced and alternative systems at $32,700 to $67,500 all-in (Premier Tech Ontario guide). Planning estimate only.
So the Ecoflo septic system cost on an easy lot can sit near a conventional system. On a hard lot, the unit is rarely the expensive part. The fill, the trucking and the access are.
What You Are Actually Buying
An Ecoflo is a filter, not a magic box. Sewage still goes to a septic tank first. The liquid then trickles through a bed of coconut husk fragments (some models use coco and peat), where bacteria living on the media clean it up. The cleaner water then goes to a smaller dispersal area in the ground.
Think of it like a coffee filter that never gets thrown out, just topped up every decade or so. The compact unit sits in its own tank. The linear version spreads the filter out and lets the treated water soak straight into the ground below it.
Two things we like as builders:
- Gravity models need no electricity for treatment. Premier Tech’s Ontario professional guide says some gravity-discharge models never need power. Pumped models do, so ask which one your lot needs.
- Smaller dispersal area. Premier Tech says a shallow buried trench after the compact unit can take up to 42% less space than a Type A bed or combined system (Ecoflo Ontario professional guide). On a tight lot, that can be the difference between fitting and not fitting.
Media Renewal: The Bill Nobody Mentions at the Kitchen Table
The coco media wears out. That is not a defect, it is how the thing works. Here is what Premier Tech itself publishes:
- The filtering medium is guaranteed for 10 years and “often lasts well beyond 15 years” (Ecoflo maintenance page).
- Their Ecoflo vs Bionest buying guide says renewals are needed about every 12.5 years on average (buying guide).
- The Ontario professional guide recommends replacement after 10 to 15 years and lists a medium replacement at $1,200 if the system was regularly maintained by approved providers. That guide uses 2022 figures.
- Their US renewal page quotes “between $3,000 and $4,000” in most cases (US renewal page). That is US pricing, not Ontario, but it tells you the number is not always small.
Renewal is a vacuum truck job that takes a few hours, with no digging. Ask your installer today what an Ontario renewal costs in your area, and get it in writing. If the answer is a shrug, budget the high side.
The Annual Contract Is Not Optional
Every advanced treatment unit in Ontario needs yearly service. The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority puts it plainly: “All treatment units must have valid maintenance agreements in place at all times” (NBMCA owner guide). The Ottawa Septic System Office says that without a current contract or proof of servicing, the owner is in violation of the Building Code (RVCA).
For the Ecoflo, the Ontario professional guide lists an average annual maintenance fee of $243 in 2022. The visit covers a 15-point inspection plus aerating and scarifying the filter surface. Expect the 2026 price to be higher than that; ask for the current figure before you buy. Premier Tech’s online portal takes contract payments but does not show a price.
You still pump the septic tank in front of the Ecoflo, the same as any system. Our pumping range is $300 to $600 every 3 to 5 years. See the pumping cost guide.
Ecoflo vs Bionest vs Waterloo Biofilter
These are the three names Ontario owners ask us about most. All three need a septic tank in front, an annual contract, and a dispersal area behind. Here is how they differ, using each maker’s own published material where we could find it:
| Ecoflo (Premier Tech) | Bionest | Waterloo Biofilter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treatment media | Coco husk (or coco and peat) | Proprietary plastic media in an aerated reactor | Absorbent foam |
| Power | None on gravity models; pump on others | Air pump runs 24/7, plus recirculation pump | Pumps dose the filter; basket units add small fans |
| Media replacement | About every 10 to 15 years | Maker’s 2011 brochure: media “almost never needs to be replaced,” 20-year media warranty | 20-year warranty; maker says no required replacement after that |
| Published Ontario installed price | Yes, $19,000 – $38,000 by model and site | Not found | Not found |
| Sludge | Removed with the media at renewal | Premier Tech says sludge removal every 2 to 4 years (a competitor’s claim) | Tank pumped when sludge and scum reach 1/3 of capacity |
Be careful with the Bionest row. Much of the published criticism of Bionest comes from Premier Tech, which sells a competing product. Premier Tech’s own Bionest service is listed as Quebec-only, so Ontario Bionest owners deal with a Bionest distributor; Oro-Medonte’s contact sheet lists one in Pembroke (Oro-Medonte treatment unit contacts). For the Waterloo side of the story, read our Waterloo Biofilter cost and reviews page. For the full brand lineup, see the advanced treatment unit comparison.
When You Actually Need an Advanced Unit
Here is the part the brochure skips. A lot of Ontario lots do not need an Ecoflo at all. A conventional bed is simpler, has no annual contract, and nothing in it wears out on a schedule. Our planning range for a conventional system is $25,000 to $40,000.
An advanced unit earns its money when the lot cannot fit or support a conventional bed. The usual reasons:
If none of those apply to you and someone is selling you a treatment unit anyway, ask them why in plain words. A good installer will have an answer that involves your soil and your lot, not their margin.
10-Year Cost of Ownership: Ecoflo Compact
Nobody publishes this, so we built it from the numbers above. Planning estimate only. Here are our assumptions, so you can swap in your own quotes:
- Compact biofilter, simple site, Premier Tech’s Ontario range: $22,000 low, $35,000 high. No tertiary add-ons.
- Annual service: $243 per year low (Premier Tech’s 2022 Ontario average), $300 per year high (our allowance for price increases since 2022).
- Tank pumping: 2 pump-outs at $300 low, 3 pump-outs at $600 high, from our $300 to $600 range every 3 to 5 years.
- Media renewal: $0 low (renewal falls after year 10), $1,200 high (Premier Tech’s Ontario figure, if it comes early).
- Gravity model, so no electricity. A pumped model adds power and an effluent pump that Premier Tech says lasts about 7 years; get that price from your installer.
- Effluent sampling, if your authority requires it, is not included. It varies by area.
| 10-year line | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Installed system | $22,000 | $35,000 |
| Annual service × 10 | $2,430 | $3,000 |
| Tank pumping | $600 | $1,800 |
| Media renewal | $0 | $1,200 |
| 10-year total | $25,030 | $41,000 |
For comparison, a conventional system at our $25,000 to $40,000 planning range plus the same pumping comes to about $25,600 to $36,800 over 10 years. On a lot that can take either, the conventional bed usually wins on cost. On a lot that can only take an advanced unit, the comparison does not matter, because the choice was made by the dirt.
They buy a house with an Ecoflo and never ask who holds the contract. When a property sells, the Ottawa Septic System Office says the seller must disclose the existing treatment unit contract to the buyer. Ask for it in writing before you firm up the offer. Our buying a home with septic page has a checklist.

Questions, answered straight
How much does an Ecoflo cost in Ontario?
Premier Tech lists $22,000 to $35,000 for a compact unit on a simple site and $28,000 to $38,000 on a difficult site, for a three-bedroom home. Linear units run $19,000 to $35,000. Tertiary add-ons are extra.
How often does Ecoflo media need replacing?
Premier Tech guarantees the media for 10 years and says it often lasts beyond 15. Their buying guide puts the average renewal at about every 12.5 years.
What does Ecoflo media replacement cost?
Premier Tech’s Ontario professional guide lists $1,200 for a regularly maintained system, using 2022 figures. Their US page says $3,000 to $4,000, so get a current written Ontario price.
Is the Ecoflo maintenance contract mandatory?
Yes. Ontario authorities such as NBMCA require treatment units to have a valid maintenance agreement at all times, and RVCA says lapsing it puts the owner in violation of the Building Code.
Does an Ecoflo use electricity?
Gravity-discharge models do not need power for treatment. Models with an effluent pump do, so ask which one your site needs.
Is Ecoflo better than Bionest or Waterloo Biofilter?
Each fits different sites. Ecoflo uses replaceable coco media and can run without power; Bionest and Waterloo use long-life plastic or foam media but need pumps or air. Compare quotes for your lot.
